What is Akkermansia muciniphila?
Akkermansia muciniphila lives in the mucus layer of the gut and makes up 1–4% of the gut microbiota in healthy adults. It is consistently depleted in people with obesity, type 2 diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease. It is called a next-generation probiotic because it is not one of the traditional Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium species.

How Akkermansia muciniphila works
Akkermansia feeds on the intestinal mucus layer and, paradoxically, stimulates the host to produce more of it — strengthening rather than eroding the gut barrier. A specific outer membrane protein, Amuc_1100, appears to drive much of the effect through TLR2 signalling. Because that protein survives pasteurisation, the heat-killed bacterium retains activity, which is why pasteurised preparations outperformed live ones in trial.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the dead version better than the live one?
Because the active component is a heat-stable outer membrane protein, and pasteurisation appears to improve its availability. This is genuinely unusual — for most probiotics, viability is the point.
Does Akkermansia cause weight loss?
Not on its own. The 2026 trial showed reduced weight regain after dieting, not weight loss without one. That is a narrower and more honest claim than most marketing makes.
Can I raise my own Akkermansia levels with diet?
Partly. Polyphenol-rich foods, fibre and cranberry or pomegranate extracts are associated with higher levels. Whether that matches supplementation is unknown.
