Human trials have used 72–144 mg daily of standardised phlorotannin extract over 8–12 weeks. Whole seaweed powder is not equivalent.
Side effects and safety
Well tolerated in the short trials available. The main practical concern is iodine: brown seaweed can be very high in it, and excess iodine causes both hyper- and hypothyroidism. Standardised phlorotannin extracts contain far less than whole seaweed, but the content is often not disclosed.

Should I worry about iodine?
Yes, enough to check. Brown seaweed can carry very high iodine levels, and both too much and too little cause thyroid problems. If the label does not state iodine content, that is a reasonable reason to skip it.
Is it better than regular polyphenols?
Higher antioxidant capacity in a test tube does not translate automatically into a better health outcome. In humans, the evidence for green tea or cocoa polyphenols is considerably stronger.
