Endurance exercise over roughly 90 minutes, heavy sweating, heat exposure, illness with vomiting or diarrhoea, and low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diets where sodium and potassium losses increase.
How Electrolytes works
Sodium maintains extracellular fluid volume and drives fluid absorption in the gut — which is why oral rehydration solutions contain both sodium and glucose. Potassium governs intracellular fluid and cardiac rhythm. Magnesium and calcium mediate muscle contraction and relaxation.

Typical dosage used in studies
Highly situational. For exercise over 90 minutes in heat, 300–600 mg sodium per hour is a reasonable starting range. For ordinary daily life, food supplies enough. Hyponatraemia in endurance athletes comes from drinking too much plain water, not from too little supplementation.
Side effects and safety
Safe for most people. The genuine risk is at the extremes: excessive sodium matters for people with hypertension or heart failure, and potassium supplementation can be dangerous in kidney disease or alongside ACE inhibitors, ARBs or potassium-sparing diuretics.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need electrolytes for a normal workout?
For under an hour in temperate conditions, almost certainly not. Water and a normal diet cover it.
Are they useful on a keto diet?
Plausibly yes. Lower insulin increases renal sodium excretion, and the fatigue and headache of the first weeks often responds to sodium.
Can I just use salt?
For sodium, essentially yes, and far more cheaply. Commercial products add potassium and magnesium and convenience.
