What is Paraxanthine?

Paraxanthine (1,7-dimethylxanthine) is the primary metabolite of caffeine in humans — roughly 72–80% of ingested caffeine is converted to it by the liver enzyme CYP1A2. It is sold as a standalone ingredient, usually under the trade name enfinity.

How Paraxanthine works

Like caffeine it antagonises adenosine receptors, but with a different profile: it is a stronger adenosine antagonist and a weaker phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which is the theoretical basis for the claim of energy without jitters. Crucially, it bypasses CYP1A2 conversion — the enzyme with substantial genetic variation between people, which is why caffeine affects individuals so differently.

Human trials have used 100–300 mg. Its half-life is shorter than caffeine's, roughly 3–4 hours against 5–6, which is the basis for the claim of less sleep disruption.

Is it better than caffeine?

Possibly, for some people — but the evidence is early and much of it comes from studies with commercial involvement. The strongest argument in its favour is mechanistic: it removes the CYP1A2 variability that makes caffeine unpredictable between individuals.

Will it keep me awake?

Less than caffeine, in principle — its half-life is shorter. It is still a stimulant, and taking it late in the day is still a bad idea.

Can I take it with coffee?

You can, but you are then stacking a stimulant on the metabolite of the same stimulant. Count the total before doing it.
