Saw palmetto dosage and extract types

Major saw palmetto trials for enlarged-prostate symptoms have commonly used around 320 mg a day of a standardised lipidosterolic extract, and the CAMUS trial increased the dose beyond that without improving results versus placebo. Extract type — hexanic, ethanolic or supercritical CO₂ — is the main point of debate, but independent placebo-controlled evidence does not show that any dose of saw palmetto alone meaningfully improves symptoms.

What doses were tested

The one-year STEP trial and the CAMUS trial were independent, placebo-controlled studies of saw palmetto extract in men with urinary symptoms. CAMUS specifically tested whether increasing the dose helped, and it did not outperform placebo. The 2023 Cochrane review concluded that saw palmetto alone produces little to no improvement in symptoms (Franco et al., 2023).
